7 Tips for Safe Winter Driving
By Frank Bagdon
When it comes to winter driving you can never be too prepared for anything. Extra precautions need to be taken once the weather turns cold and snow and ice become a reality. Here are some tips to ensure your winter driving is safe and stress-free. Always make sure that your car contains a first aid kit, matches, candles, a blanket, an ice scraper, booster cables, a snowbrush, a flashlight, a bag of sand, a shovel and an emergency "HELP" sign to place in the rear window of your vehicle if it is necessary. Having an extra pair of gloves, an extra hat and an old pair of winter boots in your trunk is a good idea as well. Before you leave from anywhere always ensure that you can see clearly out of your windows and almost make sure that there is no ice or snow anywhere in the vicinity of your lights or mirrors. Visibility is an essential element of winter driving, both for yourself and for the sake of other people. As well make doubly sure that the air intake grill of your vehicle has no ice or snow covering it. All weather tires are fine in some areas but in places where there is a lot of snow and ice you should buy snow tires and have then put on all four wheels. It is not advisable to mix radial tires with other kinds of tires. Prepare for winter driving by always ensuring that your gas tank is half full if not more so. It is an excellent idea to pour gas line antifreeze into the gas tank every time you stop for gas to prevent the lines from freezing over. You need windshield wipers that are in topnotch shape for winter driving and a suggestion is to buy ones especially made for winter that have a covering made of rubber to prevent the buildup of ice. Everyone needs to clear their windshield more often during the winter months therefore you need to always make sure you have plenty of windshield washer fluid. Check the level of it on a regular basis and top it up when necessary. Always make sure that your car battery and all of the attachments are clean, dry, tight and free of rust and corrosion. Engine oil needs to be replaced more often in the wintertime so make sure you get into the habit of checking the level often, this is especially the case if you plan to drive a fair distance. Have your tires inspected regularly. This includes the condition and the tire pressure, as well as the pressure of your spare tire. Tires do leak and it generally works out to be approximately one pound every month. |
